It was at Heatherdale that Julie first took to the competition arena aged 12. At school Julie received instruction from well known tutor of the time, Davie Duncan, who really boosted her progress as a young piper. At the age of 17 she joined Stonehaven Pipe Band, Grade 4 under Pipe Major Brian Elrick and gained the benefits of instruction from the Stonehaven Grade 1 Pipe Band. In 1995, Julie was elected Pipe Major of the band and over the next 2 years progressed the band until in 1999 they won Champions of Champions at Cowal and were promoted to Grade 3. Julie continued to progress the band in Grade 3 and in the very next season won 4th prize at Cowal, and 4th Prize at the British, putting them onto the leader table in her 1st season in the new Grade.
